Hawaii was meant to be a holiday for our anniversary which was 29 February 2016. Having our anniversary every four years we tend to plan hotels stays or holidays to celebrate. Until recently we went to dinner and spent the night at a hotel but four years ago we went on a holiday to Bali. About two-and-a-half years ago I saw something on tv about Hawaii (I can’t even remember what it was now) and that’s when I first thought about Hawaii as a destination for us. It’s part of America you see and I never wanted to go to America.
I did some research and fell in love with the idea of seeing volcanoes. I discovered there is a cruise that goes around the islands every week, year round. I was hooked. We are going to Hawaii for our anniversary!
In February 2014 I booked the cruise on the Pride of America departing 27 February 2016. I then spent a lot of time doing researching for our trip. Then in November 2014 we received an email from Norwegian Cruise Line advising that our cruise was cancelled as the ship was going into dry dock for one week for maintenance. Well that was shattering, we only have an anniversary once every four years and now my plans have been spoiled.
We needed to choose another date and I very nearly chose the next week’s cruise departing 5 March. We ended up choosing the cruise departing 14 May which is my husband, Peter’s birthday. Turns out it was a good thing we didn’t choose the 5 March date as in mid 2015 NCL announced that more cruises were cancelled as the ship would be going into an extended dry dock for five weeks in San Francisco for maintenance and makeover of cabins and other areas.
We did this holiday the expensive way – we booked a lot of tours as we didn’t want to drive on the wrong side of the road. Apart from the week on the cruise we also had another two-and-a-half weeks on the islands and nothing is cheap in Hawaii. After holidaying in Asia for a few years I was shocked at how expensive hotels were in Hawaii. And food. And everything really.
But as we were coming all the way from Perth, Western Australia we may as well do it right. And we had the best time ….
